Florida
I have visited the gulf coast of Florida regularly over my life, beginning with Daytona Beach when I was about 18 mos. old. My first trip to Panama City was in 1970, staying in a typical Florida vacation house of the late 50’s, with concrete block walls, screened porch, linoleum floors, and window air conditioners. But it was the beach. Amenities not required. Today the Gulf Coast is alive with high-end developments slowly taking over what used to be “old” Florida. Massive architecturally styled communities with tall multi-million dollar homes serve as playground for the upper income vacation home owners from all over the South. As beautiful as they are, I still have a passion for “old” Florida. The bygone days and simple life of an inner tube and a pair of filp-flops.
Alys-30A
On the pan handle of Florida, Highway 30-A is know as the Emerald Coast, following along the gulf shore west of Panama City Beach, with beaches of white sand. The stretch is lined with community developments like Rosemary Beach and Seaside (where The Truman Show was filmed). Alys Beach is a short section between Rosemary and Seacrest Beaches. Beautiful planned architecture with white stucco facades throughout, like a Greek island. This highlights every detail and creates exquisite plays of light, line, and shadow.

Beach Scenes
The sand of the Emerald Coast is bright white. The water is brilliant blue/green. The beaches are wide and one can see from Panama City to Destin on a clear day. Air Force fighter jets and transport planes often fly by skirting the coast line on their way to Pensacola. Clusters of umbrellas and shade structures, beach chairs, and water toys dot the wide surface, adding touches of bright color and resting spots for people escaping the stresses of jobs and the cities. It’s families, and tourism, and money. It’s Americana.

Florida Impressions
Leaving one’s normal environment and entering an unfamiliar space brings every detail alive if we are open to it. We become accustomed to our everyday surroundings and tend to ignore the finer points or serendipitous moments that reveal something small and beautiful. But when we travel to a new location, one we have not experienced on a daily basis, we are visually awakened to new stimulus.

Florida Landscapes
The Gulf Coast is a series of islands, dunes, and waterways, lakes, and pine forests, parks and resorts. Palmetto and Live Oaks, ferns and lichens, herons and water lilies, beautiful sunsets, and broad skies. Just one more treasured area of America, the beautiful.
